Apple confirms Qwen for China AI, pulls manual in a day
Apple's first official confirmation that China's Apple Intelligence runs on Alibaba's Qwen lasted less than a day on its own website — and the company insists nothing actually changed.
Apple published official documentation confirming Alibaba's Qwen would power Apple Intelligence in mainland China, then pulled the page within 24 hours. The manual, "Use Qwen with Apple Intelligence on Mac," appeared in Apple China's Mac user guide on August 8 — the first time Apple formally named Qwen as its China AI backend. It said mainland users on macOS 26.6 or later could route Siri queries to Qwen for photo and document analysis, and use Writing Tools to generate text and images through the model. By the morning of August 9 the page was gone, replaced by the international "Use ChatGPT with Apple Intelligence" version.
Apple's response since has been calibrated to kill the rumor mill. Customer service said the features are still working through approval and cannot launch in mainland China yet; on August 10 an official statement called the removal a "routine content update and optimization" and explicitly denied any termination of the Alibaba Cloud partnership. Reuters separately confirmed Apple says Mac users in China can connect to Qwen. The sequence reads as a premature publication: Apple Intelligence cleared CAC registration on July 8, Alibaba had already said Qwen would integrate across iOS, iPadOS, macOS and visionOS, and a partner page going live before the formal launch window is the most mundane explanation available.
The real signal is bigger than one webpage. Apple's China stack is shaping up as a multi-partner architecture — code traces in the iOS 27 beta point to Baidu Visual Search handling image search, with Qwen as the model layer, roughly mirroring the OpenAI-plus-Google split in the US. For Alibaba, the prize is a system-level default position in Apple's ecosystem: AI-related revenue hit 8.97 billion yuan last quarter, an eleventh straight quarter of triple-digit growth, and a slot inside Apple Intelligence is distribution no marketing budget can buy.
