SenseTime lands Saudi school-bus AI deal for 1.2M students
Chinese AI heavyweight SenseTime has won a Saudi contract, reported in the tens of millions of yuan, to build a national AI-powered smart school-bus platform — a student-transport digital infrastructure covering more than 1.2 million pupils from primary through high school.
The platform, developed with Saudi Arabia's national school-bus operations authority, wraps the whole commute in AI: SenseTime's multimodal large models and application-level AI agents stitch together data on students, vehicles, drivers, routes and operators, powering five capabilities — intelligent scheduling, safety assurance via AI video analysis with end-to-end traceability, coordination across education authorities, schools, operators, parents and regulators, a national-scale infrastructure layer, and data-driven decision dashboards. The companies frame it as the foundation of an end-to-end digital base for the kingdom's education transport system, explicitly aligned with Saudi Vision 2030's drive to digitize public services.
The ticket size is modest by AI-industry standards — this is not a mega-deal. But it is a revealing one. This is infrastructure export, not just software licensing: a Chinese AI firm building a national platform on its own stack, localizing it for a Gulf government, with the stated ambition of expanding it into a unified digital governance layer for education and beyond. That is exactly the playbook Gulf states want from their AI partners, and exactly the kind of anchor contract Chinese vendors need as US export controls squeeze their access to Western markets.
The win extends a pattern. SenseTime's Middle East arm — a joint venture with Saudi sovereign fund PIF — opened a joint AI innovation center with King Saud University last November, and SenseTime previously ran a national AI curriculum with Saudi's SDAIA authority that trained thousands of teachers. Saudi Arabia's willingness to keep handing SenseTime education and public-sector work suggests the relationship has moved past pilot projects into standing national infrastructure — the school-bus platform being the latest, and likely not the last, layer.
What to watch: whether the contract grows into the multi-phase rollout its "national digital foundation" framing implies — and whether rival Gulf states follow Saudi in handing Chinese AI vendors national-scale public infrastructure.
