AI data centers are turning to recycled wastewater to cool off
A joke about peeing on computers is accidentally pointing at one of the AI industry's most stubborn infrastructure problems — and at a real, unglamorous fix that's already underway.
A Liquid Death marketing stunt featuring Jason Kelce has resurfaced a genuinely serious question about how AI infrastructure gets cooled. The former Eagles star quipped that people should donate their urine to cool data centers instead of draining potable water, and while no one is seriously collecting pee by the gallon, experts say the underlying idea isn't absurd. Recycled wastewater already runs through a surprising share of industrial cooling loops, and the same treatment trains that scrub sewage can turn what Kelce joked about into water clean enough for data-center cooling towers.
The scale is the real issue. Loudoun County, Virginia — the dense data-center corridor outside Washington, D.C. — now runs more than 250 facilities and used roughly 200 million gallons of recycled water a day as of 2025, yet that still covered only 43% of the area's data-center water draw. The remaining 57%, about 260 million gallons daily, came straight from drinking-water supplies. Engineers at firms like CDM Smith say recycled water for cooling is decades-old technology that's now booming specifically because of AI demand, but it only works where a sizable treatment plant already exists; rural sites often lack the infrastructure to process millions of gallons a day, which is exactly where new campuses keep getting permitted.
The money and the policy are starting to move. Meta has committed at least $270 million toward wastewater infrastructure near its own campuses, and water-reuse advocates are pushing a bipartisan bill that would hand industries a 30% tax credit to build recycled-water capacity. Whether that's enough to outrun the buildout is the open question: treatment plants take years to permit and construct, while data-center approvals move on a much faster clock.
The backdrop is a public that's losing patience. A recent Gallup poll found about seven in ten Americans oppose having a data center built near them, and the Liquid Death campaign's virality is less about humor than about how mainstream the environmental cost of AI has become. The industry's water bill is no longer a footnote — it's part of the license to operate.
