Alibaba Cloud's CUBE 5.0 builds AI data centers in 100 days
Two infrastructure stories frame the day: Alibaba Cloud is industrializing the AI data center — compressing builds that once took a year into 100 days — and Ryanair is handing its operations to Gemini agents.
Alibaba Cloud says its CUBE 5.0 modular architecture can deliver a large-scale AI data center in about 100 days, a build that traditionally runs six to 12 months in China and 12 to 18 months in the US. The design, announced Monday, raises prefabrication of the five core systems — power, cooling, security, intelligent management and fire protection — from roughly 30 percent to 90 percent, and pairs high-voltage DC power with hybrid air-liquid cooling built to span at least three chip generations. Alibaba Cloud, which plans to more than double its global modular data center capacity this year, says the approach also cuts construction costs by more than 10 percent.
The significance is that compute delivery, not model quality, has become the industry's binding constraint — power and construction lead times decide when frontier training runs and enterprise inference actually happen. If the 100-day template holds at the flagship Ulanqab site in Inner Mongolia, Alibaba's largest facility in North China, it raises the bar for hyperscalers everywhere and hands Chinese rivals Huawei and Tencent, which are pushing similar modular designs, yet another speed advantage in the buildout race.
Ryanair is moving its operations onto Google's AI stack, signing a five-year Google Cloud deal to build Gemini-powered agents that automate operational decisions and improve crew scheduling. Europe's largest airline by passenger numbers will roll Google Workspace and Cloud services out to 35,000 employees, and tap DeepMind models including AlphaEvolve and WeatherNext for fleet operations and maintenance planning as it chases 300 million passengers a year by 2034. Financial terms were not disclosed; the partnership complements Ryanair's existing AWS usage in a deliberate dual-cloud setup meant to reduce outage risk.
Airlines are becoming a visible testbed for agentic AI — thin margins, complex scheduling and rigid compliance make them a credible place to prove agents earn their keep. For Google Cloud, the deal is a marquee enterprise win at a moment when Gemini needs exactly these large-scale deployments to counter its rivals' momentum.
