Gaode's robot dog Tutu trades the lab for real errands
Embodied AI is the headline act at this week's World Robot Conference in Beijing — and the most grounded demo comes from a mapping company better known for getting you from A to B than for building hardware.
Gaode pulled the wraps off Tutu, a quadruped robot dog it says is the first of its kind that can operate fully on its own in open, uncontrolled environments — and it showed up with five real-world jobs to do, not just a stage trick. The dog can already guide blind users along a safe route, lead tourists through a museum or shopping street with live commentary, help a shopper find and pay for items, patrol industrial sites for hazards, and handle the last hundred meters of package delivery. Gaode says Tutu can take a vague instruction — "find me a place to sit down and eat" — and turn it into a whole task chain: understand the request, read the space, plan a path, adapt to what changes, and stop safely when the job is done.
The part that makes this more than a showcase is the software underneath. Gaode says it built a full-stack "embodied" system, ABot, spanning data, models, and an agent layer, anchored by world models that generate millions of training scenes and a navigation model that can route across an entire city from a map alone. The company claims 17 top scores on standard robotics benchmarks, says the research has landed in more than a dozen CVPR 2026 papers, and that the same system can redeploy onto different robot bodies — including a wheeled, two-armed unit it also demoed, which solved a block-stacking arithmetic task on stage.
My take: the "five scenarios" framing is exactly how embodied-AI vendors are trying to escape the demo-and-pivot cycle — by proving one platform can handle messy, unscripted public-space tasks instead of a single choreographed trick. Whether Tutu actually ships beyond the expo floor is the open question, but the accessibility angle has real stakes: China's 17 million visually impaired citizens have only about 400 guide dogs today, so a reliable autonomous alternative would matter if the hardware ever scales.
What to watch: whether Gaode opens the ABot platform to third-party robot makers or keeps it captive to its own machines — that choice decides if Tutu becomes a product or a press release.
