Google launches Gemini Enterprise for Legal to take on Claude in law

The legal AI land grab just got its biggest player yet — Google has stopped dabbling and shipped a full vertical.

Google Cloud launched Gemini Enterprise for Legal on Tuesday, a purpose-built agentic AI package that plugs Gemini into the systems lawyers actually use — the company's most serious move yet into enterprise software's most lucrative vertical. Entering preview with launch customers including legal teams at Cleary, Freshfields, Weil, and Williams & Connolly, the offering bundles specialized skills that steer agents through brief drafting, citation verification, contract lifecycle management, regulatory horizon scanning, and data-subject-access requests. Underneath sits the Gemini Enterprise platform IT teams already govern, so firms get audit logging and risk controls natively rather than bolting them on after the fact.

The partner roster is the real tell. Thomson Reuters, LexisNexis, Harvey, Legora, iManage, NetDocuments, RelativityOne, Docusign, Everlaw, and the free CourtListener case database are all live as secure connectors, while Accenture, Deloitte, KPMG, and a bench of AI consultancies take the product to market. Legora goes deepest: approved mutual customers can invoke its capabilities from inside Gemini Enterprise, with citations, source grounding, and permissions carried through. And in a neat piece of hedging, Thomson Reuters is plugging into Google's platform one day after launching Thomson 1.0, its own in-house legal model — build your own model, then rent the distribution anyway.

Why it matters: legal became the first industry where enterprises reliably pay premium rates for AI, and Google arrived after OpenAI and Anthropic staked it out. Anthropic launched Claude for Legal in May and named its first Head of Claude for Legal this month; Harvey, the best-funded startup in the space, trained its own model rather than renting one. But Google brings something none of them have — the default enterprise agreement, the email, the docs, the search. Packaging AI by industry instead of by model is how you sell to managing partners who budget for practice areas, not tokens, and it turns Gemini Enterprise from a chat license into something a CIO can justify renewing.

What to watch: whether OpenAI answers with a packaged legal vertical of its own — it hired Ironclad's founder for exactly this — and whether firms accept a Google-shaped home for their most privileged workloads.
