Google's Spirit Airlines data deal stalls as a bidder and attendants push back

A dead airline's archive was supposed to become AI training fuel. Instead, the deal is frozen, a rival bidder has emerged, and a glaring privacy gap is drawing fire.

Google's $10 million purchase of Spirit Airlines' data is on hold, and the story is getting messier. A bankruptcy court that approved the deal last week temporarily halted the transaction after former flight attendants objected, and an AI training-data startup has now stepped in with a higher offer of its own. Judge Sean Lane pushed the sale deadline to September 9 to weigh the objections. The records at stake are sprawling — decades of payroll, travel and recruiting files, roughly 100 million emails, 80,000 email accounts and millions of other digital items that Google said it intends to use to improve its models.

The privacy fight is about employees, not customers. Google's original bid came with court-mandated guardrails: a court-appointed ombudsman would oversee a "de-identification" process, and Google promised never to deliberately re-identify the data. But the Association of Flight Attendants argues the protection runs the wrong way — consumer-privacy law covers customers, while the far more sensitive employee records get far less protection. "The privacy architecture of this transaction is consumer-facing; its payload is disproportionately employee-facing," the union told the court. That gap is the kind of detail that tends to surface only after a deal is signed.

Then Micro1 crashed the auction. Ali Ansari, CEO of the AI data startup Micro1 — which we covered earlier this month hitting a $500 million run rate — told Business Insider his company lodged a "materially higher" $12.5 million bid directly with Spirit's legal team, calling Google's winning offer "actually quite low" for an airline that operated for decades. Legal scholars are split on whether the court will even consider it; a well-run auction is normally hard to undo, but bankruptcy judges have discretion. Either way, the episode is a tidy illustration of how hungry AI labs and data brokers are for real-world corporate archives.


An open-source voice-conversion model is turning heads for running in real time on a CPU. MeanVC2, released by the ASLP lab and now on Hugging Face, handles cross-gender and cross-language voice conversion — the kind of task that usually needs a GPU — while hitting roughly three times faster than real time on ordinary CPU hardware (and far faster still on a 5090, per the project's benchmarks). Voice conversion itself isn't new, but a model that's both open-weight and light enough to run locally lowers the bar for spoofing and impersonation, which is worth keeping in view as these tools spread.
