Hugging Face's $400 Microduck puts a waddling robot on every desk
The model hub wants to be the place you buy your next robot, and this week it put a price tag on that ambition. Hugging Face unveiled Microduck on August 27 — a $399 bipedal robot, about ten inches tall and under two pounds, that waddles, sings and skates, developed in part by Pollen Robotics and manufactured by Shenzhen's Seeed Studio.

The launch is the clearest statement yet of a hardware push that's been quietly building for months. The company brought Pollen Robotics in-house in April 2025, then shipped Reachy Mini, an 11-inch desktop robot starting at $299, which has sold roughly 10,000 units and spawned an app store carrying more than 200 apps. Microduck builds on the open-source LeRobot library Hugging Face started in 2024 and sits in direct conversation with Open Duck Mini, a community 3D-printable biped that turned heads at Google I/O. Pricing a factory-assembled, fully kit-built robot at $399 — the same neighborhood as the hobbyist's own bill of materials — is a deliberate bid to make programmable robotics something a classroom or a curious engineer buys without a purchase order.
Why it matters: cheap, open, extensible robots have long been a talking point, but Microduck is a branded, supported product at a consumer price point, not a dev-kit experiment. It drags physical AI from research labs toward the same plug-and-play dynamic that made open models dominant — and it arrives while the frontier labs funnel astronomical sums into compute, reminding everyone that the other half of embodied AI's promise is hardware normal people can actually own. The real test is whether "waddling desk robot you can fine-tune" becomes a category, or just a novelty that gathers dust by the monitor.
