Instabase relaunches as SuperApp to move AI into team work
Instabase, the unstructured-data company that has raised more than $250 million since 2015, is rebranding as SuperApp and shipping a flagship work platform built around team collaboration with AI models. The new app pairs a Slack-style communication interface with a Google-Docs-like document library and deep access to models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google — with routing that picks the right model for each task so users don't have to choose one themselves.
The pitch is that most AI today is built "for one person at a time," as founder and CEO Anant Bhardwaj put it, while meaningful work happens in teams. SuperApp embeds models directly into the chat where colleagues talk, so a project can be researched, reviewed, briefed and stored in one shared place with a durable record of the reasoning behind the final answer. Users can still pick a preferred model or compare several in the same context, and the company stresses freedom of model, data and cloud — the ability to switch providers without rebuilding applications or locking in architecture. "Freedom is not a feature. It is the foundation," Bhardwaj said.
That anti-lock-in positioning is the interesting part of this launch, and it lands at a moment when enterprises are increasingly spooked by dependence on a single frontier lab. The company calls the transition "a new product and a new company direction," not a rebrand of its existing Instabase AI Hub — though the Hub lives on and uses SuperApp technology under the hood. The relaunch pivots away from the unstructured-data processing that built the company toward the far more crowded AI-collaboration arena, where it will battle not just Anthropic's Claude and Microsoft's Copilot workspace but a swarm of agent teammates touting similar team-first messaging.
The bet is that a shared, model-neutral workspace with a persistent history of the thinking will win over the fragmented "chat here, work there" workflow most knowledge teams have adopted. Whether teams will actually consolidate around a third-place tool rather than the AI already inside their chat and doc apps is the open question. Worth watching: whether the model-routing, vendor-neutral pitch becomes a genuine selling point or just a hedge nobody asked for.
