Ireland is Europe's data-centre capital, and it's running out of cheap ways to power the AI boom. Lawmakers are now reopening a debate the country closed in 1999, when it banned nuclear power — a sign of how hard the AI buildout is bending national energy policy in the world's smaller grids.
Ireland is reconsidering its 1999 ban on nuclear power, driven by data centres that now account for about a quarter of the country's electricity use. The Financial Times reports that politicians are reopening the question as AI infrastructure strains a grid built for a much smaller power base. Ireland hosts a dense cluster of European data centres drawn by low corporation tax and cool climate, and the buildout has turned the country into a test case for every nation trying to square fast-growing AI demand with limited, decarbonising grids. For years the operator has had to manage wind-rich but intermittently supplied power around large hyperscale loads; nuclear, once politically untouchable, is being discussed as a steady baseload answer.
Why it matters: this is the AI energy crunch arriving in policy form. Ireland's situation is acute — roughly 25% of national electricity going to data centres is an extreme share by global standards, a figure most countries won't reach for years but that every AI-fuelled grid is heading toward. The 1999 ban reflected the same safety concerns that still dominate nuclear politics across Europe, so its reconsideration signals real pressure rather than posturing. The International Atomic Energy Agency notes that data centres, AI and cryptocurrencies are precisely the demand sources now nudging operators toward advanced nuclear — a dynamic Australia, Japan and parts of the US are also watching as small modular reactors get pitched as the answer to AI's voracious, round-the-clock compute appetite. Don't expect a quick reversal: nuclear plants take a decade-plus to build, and a decision now would still arrive long after the data centres it's meant to serve. But the mere reopening of the question marks how far the AI buildout has moved energy from a background concern to a first-order planning constraint.
The broader read for the industry is that cheap, abundant power is becoming the binding constraint on AI's next phase — not chips, not models. Ireland is the first major economy where the politics are catching up to the physics, and the outcome there will be watched closely by every region trying to host AI infrastructure without relitigating its own energy politics.
