One of China's most-cited AI scientists is now an embodied-AI founder — without leaving his day job. The move caps a week when every major Chinese robotics player seemed to be carving out a separate entity.

NIO's head of autonomous driving, Ren Shaoqing — a co-author of the landmark ResNet paper — has quietly registered a physical-AI and embodied-intelligence company that's already valued at unicorn levels, with NIO taking a strategic stake.

CEO Li Bin announced the venture at an intelligence-driving all-hands meeting on August 24, telling staff that Ren has founded an independent company focused on physical-AI foundation models and embodied intelligence, and that NIO will make a strategic investment and collaborate with it. Critically, Ren stays on as head of NIO's autonomous-driving unit — a "divorce but still live at home" arrangement, as QbitAI put it. The new entity's name and funding details remain under water, but 晚点 LatePost reports it has completed registration at a valuation above $1 billion.

The structure reveals how China's EV makers are trying to hold onto top AI talent while shedding the cost of long-cycle robotics bets. Xiaopeng just carved out its own robotics unit in a $900 million round at a post-money valuation above $6.3 billion, and Li Auto has backed an embodied-AI startup founded by two of its own executives. Instead of incubating robots inside a balance sheet that's just returned to profitability, NIO writes a check to an external vehicle its chief scientist runs.

Ren's pedigree explains the valuation. A ResNet co-author who also led Faster R-CNN, he's cited more than 490,000 times — the most of any Chinese scholar — and was the architect of NIO's world-model self-driving strategy. World models are increasingly seen as the shared paradigm for both autonomous driving and embodied robotics, which is exactly the technical bridge his new company is built on.
