China's in-car AI race just got a new economics story: a 7-nanometer automotive AI chip priced in the thousand-yuan range is now shipping at volume.

SiEngine, the Wuhan-based automotive chipmaker, announced on August 12 that its self-developed Tiangong 100 AI accelerator has entered full mass production, with batch shipments now going out to automakers and Tier-1 suppliers. The chip is an automotive-grade 7nm part rated at 96 TOPS, and the number that has the industry talking is the cost: hardware in the thousand-yuan class, according to the announcement relayed through the Wuhan Economic Development Zone. At that price, the chip is being pitched as a literal add-on — enough local compute to run a capable on-device LLM in a car for less than what a premium sound system costs. SiEngine had previewed Tiangong 100 at the Beijing Auto Show in April, so the production milestone itself was widely expected; the economics behind it are the real story.

What makes this matter is inference economics, not silicon novelty. Carmakers today face a choice between cloud-dependent AI features — which carry per-token costs, latency, and connectivity requirements — and expensive in-house silicon. A 96 TOPS accelerator at this price point makes the third option viable: run the model in the car, offline, for a one-time hardware cost that fits a mainstream vehicle's bill of materials. For China's EV market, where in-car AI assistants have become a headline differentiator, that could quietly reset what buyers expect as standard equipment, and it gives domestic automakers a homegrown alternative to imported AI compute as they race to ship models with LLMs built in.

It is also a signal about the maturity of China's automotive chip supply chain. SiEngine is one of a wave of domestic suppliers moving from design wins to volume production, and Tiangong 100's ramp — announced just two weeks after the Beijing show where it debuted — suggests the auto AI stack is becoming a mainstream, mass-market component rather than a flagship feature. The obvious follow-ons are which automakers put Tiangong 100 in a shipping model first, and whether the thousand-yuan price holds as volumes scale.
