A reality check rippled through the hottest corner of AI investing this week, and it came from the public markets rather than a lab. China's flagship robot maker saw its valuation roughly halve days after a euphoric listing — at the same moment the builders of robot "brains" were privately admitting their field is still stuck in a pre-ChatGPT phase.

Billions have flowed into robot startups on the promise that physical AI is on the verge of its ChatGPT moment; the public market is now demanding proof rather than the promise. The productive read of the rout isn't that the category is a bubble — it's that the general-purpose bet is premature while the vertical specialists quietly generating revenue and real-world data are the ones with staying power. AWS is acquiring DuckLabs, the company behind the wildly popular DuckDB analytical database — and pledging to keep it, and its "Duck Stack" of projects, open source. The bootstrapped Amsterdam team of founders Mark Raasveldt and Hannes Mühleisen, together just over 30 people, will join Amazon Web Services effective early September, with the promise to continue their years-long work on DuckDB, DuckLake, and Quack. The core projects — which see more than a million downloads a day — remain free under the MIT license, the nonprofit DuckDB Foundation keeps stewardship, and the team stays put in Amsterdam; AWS says it's committed to the project long term, while the foundation gains a technical advisory board and the extension stack opens up.

Why it matters: hyperscaler takeovers of beloved open-source projects ordinarily trigger an open-source anxiety alarm; this one leans the other way.
