Unitree's founder gives robots a two- to ten-year path to a 'ChatGPT moment'
China's robot sector spent this week at the World Robot Conference in Beijing celebrating its hottest-ever stretch — Unitree's Shanghai debut soared nearly sixfold before cooling — yet the industry's own leader is keeping expectations firmly in check. Unitree founder and CEO Wang Xingxing told attendees the field is "marching towards a ChatGPT moment" in embodied intelligence, but cautioned that the breakthrough that would turn robots into everyday tools is still two to three years away at best, or five to ten on a slower timeline.
Wang made the case that robots are close to a real tipping point, not there yet. He framed the goal in concrete terms a non-engineer can grasp: a robot dropped into an unfamiliar household should complete roughly 80 percent of everyday tasks through simple voice or text commands. "It is an important tipping point for the robot industry to usher in explosive growth," he said. That specific definition of a "ChatGPT moment" has no obvious current equivalent for world models — the systems that let robots understand physical environments — which is exactly why Wang's timeline cuts against the surrounding hype. The sober framing is notable precisely because it comes from the company best positioned to inflate expectations. Unitree is the world's largest maker of robot dogs and the second-biggest producer of humanoid robots by shipments, yet analysts at the conference picked up on how deliberately Wang downgraded current capabilities relative to the surrounding mood. Peers are a touch more aggressive on timing: Galbot founder Wang He argues the ChatGPT-moment threshold of doing 70 to 80 percent of everyday tasks untrained could be reached by 2028. Whether the inflection arrives in two years or ten mostly decides who erects a durable earner in robotics versus a crowd of imitators — but the destination, embodied AI that works in unscripted homes, is no longer contested.
