Waymo and Zoox test drivers are getting hurt as robotaxis scale

Robotaxi operators are getting hurt as the robots scale. Waymo's and Zoox's on-road test drivers logged more than two dozen injuries in 2024 and 2025 from hard braking and sudden swerves, according to a TechCrunch review of US safety data. The injuries — sprains, strains, and whiplash — landed some workers on the sidelines for weeks or months. Transdev, which employs and manages Waymo's test drivers, reported 16 injuries tied to Waymo depots across three cities, all blamed on the autonomous software braking hard or swerving; Zoox reported as many as eight. The two companies show up only because they classify as taxi-style transit services, a higher-hazard category that OSHA forces into public disclosure.

The human cost is the part the benchmarks never capture. Zoox contractors told TechCrunch that hard braking was still happening as recently as July, with workers still getting hurt — to which Zoox responded that such incidents are sometimes unavoidable and represent a small fraction of millions of test miles. Waymo stressed that lessons from those operator trips are funneled back into the service. But the pattern is worth sitting with: every one of those abrupt stops is the edge case driving the news cycle's rosier claims, and the people absorbing it are employees, not marketing copy. As robotaxis pile up miles faster than regulations catch up, workplace-safety reporting is quietly becoming one of the truest windows into how the systems actually behave.


Waymo is firing back at Tesla's camera-only bet. Waymo's onboard-software chief, Srikanth Thirumalai, made the case in a blog post titled "10 AI Lessons from Driving 200+ Million Fully Autonomous Miles" that cameras alone can't solve full autonomy — a pointed swipe timed right before Tesla's launch of its wheel- and pedal-less Cybercab. "Cameras are incredible, but they aren't enough," he wrote, arguing that safe operation at scale demands lidar and radar layered on top of cameras for a redundant view no single sensor can replicate. He stopped short of naming Musk or Tesla, but the subtext was unmistakable. It's the sensor-debate needle not moving on new data: Waymo's 200 million real-world miles against Tesla's faith in pure vision, with the Cybercab rollout acting as the live test of which philosophy holds.

Right now the two first-hand accounts of robotaxis read as mirror images — sensors that brake too hard on operators, and companies arguing their sensor stack is the one that's safe enough. Keep an eye on whether the worker-injury reporting softens Tesla's driverless rollout, and whether Waymo's lidar gospel holds up once the Cybercabs hit the road.
